Fritz Abel
1925 - 2008
Frederick “Fritz” Abel, Kappa Kappa 1, Ball State ’49, died peacefully at age 83 on June 4, 2008.
Fritz was a well-loved friend and brother who served as National President of Kappa Sigma Kappa Fraternity from 1951–57. Kappa Sigma Kappa Fraternity merged with Theta Xi in 1962 and Brother Abel, upon his initiation at his home chapter at Ball State University, received the roll number of Kappa Kappa 1. He served Theta Xi nationally as a Trustee for the Theta Xi Foundation from 1962 to 1967.
Fritz was a strong supporter of Theta Xi who loved to travel. He and his family regularly made driving trips from his home in California back to the Midwest. Visits to his alma mater in Muncie occurred regularly. Brother Abel attended several Theta Xi national conventions over the years, his last Convention being the 2001 Convention in Palm Springs, CA.
Brother Abel was also a fan of email who enjoyed sharing a good joke as much as anyone we have known.
Starting at age 18, Fritz served in the US Navy from 1943-1955 and was honorably discharged having risen to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Storekeeper Chief (SKF). At that point, he found his calling as a public school teacher and taught for 21 years, mostly in business education.
Brother Abel was married to his adoring wife, Lorraine, for 52 years. She preceded him in death in December 2007. He is survived by his son Andrew, his wife Tama, and more than 40 nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated on June 23, 2008 in Covina, CA. Memorial gifts in honor of the Lorraine and Frederick L. Abel Memorial Scholarship can be made to Charter Oak Community Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 1763, Covina, CA 91722.
